ALPINE ESCAPE: Big Almaty Lake Day Tour
Escape the city and immerse yourself in the pristine alpine beauty of Big Almaty Lake (BAO). Famous for its breathtaking turquoise waters framed by dramatic snow-capped peaks, this iconic destination is a must-see for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a refreshing breath of mountain air.
To make your day perfect, we offer two distinct ways to experience the region. Choose the pace that suits you best:
- Option 1: Mountain Equestrian Experience: Combine your lake visit with a peaceful horseback ride through the scenic foothills and lush apple orchards. This is a fantastic way to connect with nature, and no prior riding experience is required!
- Option 2: Gorges, Waterfalls & Falconry: Extend your sightseeing with immersive nature walks through the lush Alma-Arasan and Ayusai gorges. The day is capped off with a spectacular, traditional Birds of Prey show at a local Falconry Center (show available from April to October).
⚠️ IMPORTANT ACCESS NOTICE: Since March 2020, the main road to Big Almaty Lake has been closed to standard private vehicles for an indefinite period, forcing most tourists to hike a long distance. To save you time and energy, we utilize specialized 4×4 SUVs and unofficial local access routes to drive our guests directly to the lake. Please be aware that because this access is highly restricted, there is a small chance the route may be blocked by authorities on the day of the tour, which could result in a sudden cancellation.
🕒 DETAILED ITINERARIES
OPTION 1: Big Almaty Lake & Horseback Riding (Half-Day)
- 07:30 – 08:00 | Morning Pick-Up: Meet your guide in Almaty (exact timing provided the day before).
- Morning | SUV Mountain Ascent: Transfer into our specialized 4×4 vehicles for the rugged drive up the mountain to the lake.
- Morning | Big Almaty Lake: Spend ample time walking along the shoreline, enjoying the sweeping views, and capturing photos at the best vantage points.
- Mid-Day | Ayusai Visitor Center: Head back down the mountain for a relaxing break to grab coffee, browse local souvenirs, and learn about the national park.
- Mid-Day | Equestrian Club: Arrive at the stables for an optional, guided horseback ride through the beautiful mountain trails. (Note: Riding and lunch are optional add-ons not included in the tour price).
- 14:30 – 15:00 | Return to Almaty: Comfortable drop-off at your original meeting point.
OPTION 2: Big Almaty Lake, Gorges & Falconry Show (Full-Day)
- 07:30 – 08:00 | Morning Pick-Up: Meet your guide in Almaty (exact timing provided the day before).
- Morning | SUV Mountain Ascent: Transfer into 4×4 vehicles to navigate the restricted road up to the lake.
- Morning | Big Almaty Lake: Breathe in the fresh alpine air and take in the spectacular views of the turquoise reservoir.
- Mid-Day | Ayusai Gorge & Waterfall: Take a short, scenic nature walk to the beautiful Ayusai waterfall, with plenty of stops for photos.
- Mid-Day | Lunch Break: Relax at the Ayusai Visitor Center, where you can shop for souvenirs and grab lunch at the local cafe (lunch not included).
- Afternoon | Alma-Arasan Gorge & Hot Springs: Head to the trailhead for a beautiful short hike to the “Maiden’s Tears” waterfall. You will also have the option to take a quick, refreshing dip in the natural open-air thermal springs!
- Late Afternoon | Falconry Center: Arrive at the raptor sanctuary to explore the grounds and witness an incredible, traditional Birds of Prey hunting demonstration.
- 17:30 – 18:00 | Return to Almaty: Drop-off at your original meeting point after a full day of alpine exploration.
